And what's your favorite Janis Ian song?

I just started getting into music at 12. Suddenly there was a major controversy about "Society's Child", written by a 14-year old. Much of it dealt with adult hypocrisy, of course I felt an immediate kinship with Janis Ian. I didn't hear anymore about her until 1975 when "At Seventeen" broke. I bought that album and the one that followed a few months later.

At the time, I had ties with lesbian community (even though I'm a straight male), and although she had not publicly come out, she was an icon in that community. Melancholy love songs cross gender barriers.

I saw Janis Ian live a two years ago, and purchased her three latest cds, which she graciously autographed after the show. You don't find many performers willing to interact with the audiences these days. I was also impressed that the money that came from cd sales at the concert went to benefit The Pearl Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides scholarships, making a difference in lives far beyond the joy she brings with her music.

At Seventeen! Even though I am a guy I really related to the words. I could easily have written that song.
