The book "COMMON SENSE" by Thomas Paine did more to get the revolution going than the declaration of Independence.
READ IT. it is only 46 pages but is a very radical document that is under-appreciated.
do not be confused. just study the events in order and it all makes sense. it was a pretty short period of history
there is agood TV series called "THE REVOLUTION" that explains it well and interesting too. it is about a 5 parter.

The Declaration of Independence states the basic rights and freedoms of every American citizen. Ammendments are additions to these freedoms. There are 56 orginal signers to the DoI. They all died in there beds, and notbecause of signing it. Whatever is not covered in the DoI or Ammendments is left up to States. These are State's rights.

The declaration of independence has no legal value at this point, it merely told England we were no longer part of them.
( think of it as a declaration of treason if we had lost)
