My 3 month old son is sick with flu and having a lot of mucus, he is coughing and having difficulty drinking milk. I have brought him to the doctor but the medicines doesn't seem to be working.
Any solutions or recommendation for a good children doctor?

I always heard milk makes mucus worse but I don't know how you'd avoid giving it to a 3 month old. I always found putting a "wedge" under the crib mattress helped alleviate the wheezing. If it's really bad, run a hot shower and sit with your baby in the bathroom. The steam can help break up the mucus. You can also "aspirate" the mucus with a bulb aspirator. If the cough sounds like a seal barking, it's probably croup, which can be serious. Your pediatrician can diagnose it and check for lowered oxygen levels in the blood. My son was hospitalized twice with croup the first year. Hope that helps.

Ask your friends for referrals. You might have to get a nebulizer machine and an appropriate medication for him. I am not saying that this is the definitive answer to your sons problem. Your Dr may be trying to be cautious. Have you ever heard the saying "First do no harm." Go back immediately and tell him you feel that the Med. is not working. Not all Meds. work on all babies/adults. Then if he/she is non compliant then see another doctor immediately after. Not drinking milk really is normal, my son went through it as well. I feel your pain. Trial and error is a big part of being a mother be patient and use your motherly instincts and do what you feel right for you and your son.

I would definitley be running a humidifier in your home, as well as put a pillow under his crib mattress, so he will be elevated when he's asleep. My baby had bronchiolitis and this is what his doc. told me to do. I'd say the humidifier definitely worked the best! The crib elevation helps the mucous drain down, instead of resting flat and staying in his chest. Good luck!
Oh~and use the bulb syringe, and get the mucous out of his nose before it even has a chance to go to his chest, that should help too! This will help him breathe, and drink his milk a lot easier.

You baby's coughing maybe due to phlegm that is causing the irratation, difficulty drinking milk maybe is due to the the mucus in the nose that is flowing back to the throat.
These 2 remedies is very effective in clearing phlegm especially the hou zhao san.
I gave it to my son when he has a lot of phlegm in the throat and when medicine doesn't seem effective.
Eu Yan Sang Pearl powder ($15.00) to be given in 3 doses or Hou zhao san ($58.00) given in 4 doses. (Give 3 hrs interval with medicine)
It is worth trying as you will see how miracle is the recovery.
Do get it treated asap, do not prolong or it will become a lifetime allergy . Best of health to you r baby!!

If the medication isn't working or symptoms are getting worse you need to call the doctors office back and speak to a nurse. She may say it takes longer to work or tell you to bring the baby back in. Also make sure you are still getting 5 good wet diapers a day other wise he may be dehydrating.
To treat symptoms ... use the suction bulb to clear his nasal passages often (even though he will hate it) and you may try Johnsons and Johnsons medicated (menthalated) lotion. It is far more gentel than Vicks vapor rub. Before feeding him suction him then put lotion on his chest and just a tiny dab below his nose and he may be able to stay cleared long enough to eat.

saline in the nose is harmless it will help to break up the mucus. it's about $1.00 or less it may be called ocean spray. also get a humidifier and if you can't afford one right now put vicks in the bottom of your tub or shower and let hot water run on it and keep your baby in the bathroom for about 10 minutes that too will help him loosen up his mucus. if that dosn't help tell your doctor you want some pan mist. it is a prescribed decongestant. i worked for an ear nose and throat doctor for 4 1/2 years.

2 of my 3 boys have asthma so we are old hands at breathing problems. We spent lots of nights in the bathroom with the hot shower running, (not in the shower) and the steam helped to break down the mucus and help them breathe.

You might call your local hospital for names of peds in your area. If you aren't getting the answers you need from your current doctor I would definitely get a new one.

Hook up a humidifier near his crib so that way the mucous will get broken down then after he has been laying for a little bit you rub and pat his back on his lungs...try to keep your hand cupped because it creates a type of suction that also breaks up the mucous... he should start to cough and hopefully cough up all of that unwanted mucous once and for all.

When my daughter was about 3 months old she had a small cold..The nurse I spoke with told me that I could try to give her a few sips of water to help brake up the mucus and to try and keep her head elevated just a little to help the mucus drain...Hope your little one feels better soon..Good Luck.
