Slavery destroyed a culture. White people have trouble comprehending how much our identity is formed by our past. Black people have, however, progressed as a group. Things are getting better. There's a lot of talk about Black "counter-culture." But black counter-culture never formed until blacks started to emerge as a part of mainstream society and culture. It will take a couple of generations, but eventually racism will cease to exist among white and black americans.

Ask the Indians and they will tell you what's up. It's the same reasons that asians are still made fun off and treated like they are cheap and rude ( concentration camps in hawaii were not so very long ago). The same reason someone with AIDS is treated so poorly. It has nothing to do with slavery, everyone has gotton the shaft but the basic white man who in turn can be educated or think they are above and derseve the extra help they've gotton. The reason black people have the stigma they have is because of tv, movies , music and the media. Other then Bill Cosby most black people act it up for the white auidence ( don't argue with me white people, way more white people have cable and to have a tv show on you have to appeal to a major auidence) and when you are poor in america which most minorities are, you are treated with less respect. Poor people get treated like crap and poor black people get it worse because of the way the are portrayed in the media (esp news). Black people will always have steortypes in America (no one else has this problem) Same problem women and now islams will have. Donlad trump is a rich white man that has had three wives, and is such a jerk is crazy. He is considered a business man. Martha Stewart runs the same kind of business and all people can talk about is what a cold witch she is. Rich men don't want women or minorites to suceed. If the poor stay poor the rich stay rich.

African Americans are progressing. Some more rapidly that others. There are doctors, lawyers, business men, etc. What's hampering the majority is not a history of slavery, though, it's a hundred and thirty or fourty years of prejudice and descrimination. According to psychology, if someone is told over and over, day in and day out, that they're dumb and lazy and worthless, after a while they buy into it. That's what's happened to black America, and what has to be overcome. Black youngsters, even now, do poorly in school, not because the schools they attend are bad, but because they cannot see themselves succeeding. Parents are going to have to get involved and learn to constently praise and encourage their kids. It's the only way to jump start "progress." Otherwise, overcoming the legacy of bigotry is likely to take severly more generations.

The only thing holding back the African Americans is the lack of drive. There have been 5 generations without slavery and it should not be used an excuse for not doing something with your life. Excuses accomplish nothing. Planning gets something positive from life and permits achievements. The key is to take away the excuse completely. The holdup today in advancement of many is the idea they are owed something. Work is the answer to poverty. Work on your knowledge prepares you for better jobs and that provides a better life.

Only when they quit thinking that everybody owes them something because their ancestors were slaves. Every race existing upon this planet has at one time or another been subject to slavery. Its not something we care to look at on a day to day basis, but being that these were our ancestors and the people that enslaved them are DEAD and GONE its something that we as a whole race " The Human Race" need to address and then move on. Of course there are still some peoples that do still practice slavery and therefore there are still slaves. But the African American community as a citizens of the United States have not been slaves for well over 150 yrs now. Granted they have had to deal with Racism on an overwhelming level for most of that time, yet in todays world we here these excuses for their poverty and plight : You enslaved my people! My ancestors were slaves! Your white, your people kept my people as slaves! Your white and your racist! First of all "My" people never owned slaves. They actually fought for your ancestors freedom. Second, yes your ancestors were slaves BUT YOU ARE NOT! Third, I am white but by no means a racist and I take offense when I am targeted as one when I remark on gang violence or the way in which some of the African American Community choose to present themselves to the public. I would say the same thing about a dumb foul mouthed going nowhere but the grave or prison white person too! And I do!! So until the African Americans quit blaming everything on slavery and racism they as a whole cannot move forward. For those who have I hold the utmost respect and commend them! For those who don't I feel they have no one to blame at this stage but themselves. The opportunities are there for us all we only have to have the fortitude and self respect to use them to our advantage.

yes...but only if they can stop being "African" Americans, instead of just Americans...that is the first step. The second step is for the younger generation to look at what their parents and grand parents fought for in the 50's 60's , then expand on it.The third step is toward is to be equal...not owed or trying to be privileged...but equal. If an individual wants something they can get it...they just have to work for it. There will always be bigotry between different races and different groups. That is just one of the many hurdles in life we all must deal with.

Thats a tough question
its not just slavery that has hindered or people its the 100 years of institutionalized discrimination our people have faced from white americans.
This is what white people fail to realize.
sure slavery ended in 1865..but we didn't get civil rights in this country until the 1960s.
That is not that long ago so of course our people are still behind both economically and socially.
To white people: We'll get over it as soon as you let us.

Yes, and they already have... look, no more slavery! No more segragation! Black people in public office! Black people voting! There will always be prejudices... that is just an aspect of our screwed up world culture. Unfortunately, people care too much about what other people think, as if other peoples' screwed up viewpoints are worth a damn.

Black people can overcome, they have to stop living in the past and look to the future. Black people have to stop cutting each others throats. In the words of the Late Bob Marley, black people have to "Emancipate themselves from mental slavery..." Blaming your standing in society on something that happened over 200 years ago is a cop out. We need to stop listening to the so-called "Black Leaders" and start doing for ourselves.

The first step always begins with stopping the blame and really coming together as a community and caring. Whenever people finally breed together enough to where there is only one ****** up race then they would still find something to ***** about if they wanted. Destroy the negative and let's get positive.
