The sign of the cross invokes the Holy Trinity, to whom prayers are directed. i.e. In the Name of The Father, The Son and The Holy Spirit I ask that my prayer is heard and answered. The sign is done before and after a prayer or service.

This is typically Catholic, and crossing themselves symbolizes the Father, Son and Holy Ghost. Some do it at the beginning of a prayer, most do it at the end, as a sign of respect, and a plea that the Holy Trinity will hear their prayer.

the cross sybolizes Tamuz for one (ancient Babylonian goddess), but I doubt it's got anything to do with the prayers of whom you speak. I belive it is for protection and for a certainty that your prayer is received by the right being.

it symbolize the father, son and holy ghost. we make it at the beginning of a pray and at the end of a pray. it is the respect that we have for god. he is our father and we respect him. to thank him for all that we have.
