A noble effort against an unseen enemy.

It is a noble effort. Most of the most obvious work is done now, so the next person will just have to work with more limited deployment. We cannot invade Iran or Korea, but we will have to continue the high-level diplomatic efforts. We must bolster and improve the ability of the Indonesian police to fight the terrorism in their country. South America has problems with terror and kidnapping also. It would be a different angle by which to strike a blow against the cocaine production and trade industry. The part of this war where we invade other countries is mostly over. It's time to find the ways that we can transform the effort into training, supporting, and working with the police of various nations in order to cripple the threat of terrorism for the long term. This will require diplomacy, the ability to give and take, and open ended dialogue. I hope that our next president will be able to do these things.

I believe that in reality the "War on Terror" is another term for the "Modern Day Crusades"...The middle east has had conflicts & wars since the begining of time & won't truely stop until the whole area is turned to glass...America should lead by example, not by military might and cause change to come from within because other countries "want" to be more like another successful country...I'm no peace loving wimp...I'm an ex Army Airborne Ranger who was in Vietnam during the Fall of Saigon & I tried to volunteer to go and liberate Kuwait or join a team to assassinate Huissain, but I was already too old...

The war on terror is a noble effort, yes. Keyword: effort. Nothing the USA can say or do well ever stop terrorism. Ever. The low cost and high effectiveness is too attractive for militias to pass up. President Bush fights terrorism because it has a nasty name, and you can't be called a bad guy for doing it. The world looks to the US to stop terrorism, because we would look like a bunch of hypocrites if we didn't. We have made too many empty promises to stop now.

EDIT: As to your question regarding Middle Easterners as "Worth it?" It's irrelevant. The invasion of Iraq was to take out a regime, not a terrorist. Terrorist dont bomb their own people, unless its indirectly to harm another faction.

War is never noble or heroic, and should be avoided unless it is a last resort. You can only have a meaningful dialogue for peace with those who want peace. Terrorists do not want peace, it is not their goal. The goal of terrorism is domination. Removing all those who do not agree with their views or oppinions. Terrorists have no compassion or sense of loyalty, not even to their own, and will change alliegiences midstream. They stand for nothing which means they fall for anything. They use the excuse of religion to try and justify their madness to the world. They are like mad-dogs, the only cure is a bullet to the brain. If there is anything noble or heroic about war, it is the nations that rise up to destroy the madness that is terrorism. They are animals and deserve no more consideration or compassion than an animal that kills for the sake of killing, or is infected with rabies. They deserve nothing more than total and absolute destruction. Any ruler of any nation which compromises or shows mercy to a terrorist is a coward and not worthy of leadership, and a country who shows mercy and compassion to terrorists has no right to complain when the disease which is terrorism destroys them or their loved ones.

It is a fruitless effort. The USA can not police the ENTIRE world and rid it of terrorism. If this "war on terror" has any chance at success, it will take a global effort. How long have we been fighting the war on drugs? America will never be free of drugs nor terrorism as long as the rest of the world waits for some one else to step in and fix the problem.

I think you are confused. To call something a "noble cause" doesn't give it actual validity or give you a reason to say it's right or wrong. "Noble" is a description based on perception. While we like to call our actions "noble" the "terrorists" also call their actions "noble". Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Your question should be if our actions and investment (in time, money, and lives of our dear soldiers) is worth whatever end result we could get out of it, whether it be money, diplomacy, oil, relations, whatever. Our little opinions on the internet don't matter and if you think they do you're kidding yourself. I whole-heartedly believe in democracy and our way of life in America but the dream that everyone's voice is heard and counts is lost in the thousands of different opinions and voices. We have a war on poverty and starving children right here on our own streets but it doesn't sell papers, commercials or votes. We have been the world's policeman for years and what has it gotten us? France turns around and stabs us in the back after saving their butts Twice by continuing to sell missles to Saddam while we're in the middle of an invasion. And Russia continues to deal with ANY buying contry to desperately make money whether it be Iran, Palestine, or Radical Muslim groups. I think the price is too high for any REAL positive result in that area of the world. The only way to fix things with the desparity btween democracy and radical muslims is a change in their thinking and way of life. Thousands of years of engrained violence, pain, and feelings of a raw deal won't change in one man's 2 terms as President of the United States. We need the whole world to come together with a common goal to succeed. Good Luck!

It's not only a noble effort, it's vital to our survival. Unfortunately, our current administration and the rubber stamp congress are more interested in exploiting it to maintain their own positions and make their supporters rich. Osama bin Laden is still at large and they've spent the last month debating gay marriage and a flag burning amendment. A flag burning amendment for crying out loud! When was the last time you heard about anyone in this country burning a flag? They know they're failing in the war on terror, so they're throwing meat to the right-wing cranks who vote in midterm elections. They're more worried about job security than homeland security.

I believe that the GWOT is a noble idea. How we're fighting it, not so noble. This is a war about ideals. Not about bullets and bombs. This is considered the 4th generation of warfare. and as such it can't be fought using the methods of the first three. This war needs to be fought financially. It's about quality of life. If you look at where Islamic Extremism is taking hold, you'll see very high unemployment rates. These are people who have a very bleak outlook on life and our actions are only reinforcing it. Instead of invading it with soldiers bearing arms, we need to invade it with citizens bearing cash. We need to help these countries develope methods of supporting their people.

Yes, we are one of the few countries mighty enough to take terror on. If we don't go out and stop it, no one can. It is time to show the terrorists that we will not sit back and let them terrorize the world, they can't do it they have no right.

I wish we weren't so alone in this, if countries can not send soldiers, let them send money, let them stand up and say they are with us. Maybe then the people who are lucky enough to live here and run their mouths beating down the US will contain themselves.

Hey mini_roller...do you believe in the boogey man too? I have seen that video, it is a bunch of crap.
