There are many kinds of literary criticism. But here are some of the basics.
Genetic- emphasizes a view of the literary work as primarily a reflection of the author's life and times.
Formal- depends on close readings in order to understand how textual elements work together to create a unified whole. Formal critics believe that the meaning of a text lies in the language of the text itself.
Text-to-text - suggests that interpretation depends on how a text fits within the larger body of literature. Such comparisons look at texts by the same author, in the same genre, using similar stylistic devices, etc.
Transactional - the reader brings individual life experience to the text that acts as a guide.
sociocultural - concentrates on the political and socio-historical dimensions of response. Questions of power and authority are key.
Keep in mind that this is a brief summary of five out of many.
