Pay phone? That's high tech ... try smoke signals and the pony express!

Ok, I'm not that old, but I did have to walk to school in the snow uphill both ways!

Yes I remember. We survived very well without cells. Life was not as stressful when the cell was not around - traffic has become more of a headache because of people driving and talking at the same time (I have been rear-ended by people talking on cell phones and not paying attention to the fact that the light changed and we were stopped - twice!), restaurants did not have people having conversations with phones instead of the people they were with - and at times it is on speaker so we all get to hear the conversation of people we don't know, theater productions and movies are interrupted by someone's call as they feel they are too important to turn the thing off (even if there is a notice to please do so), I have sat in doctor's waiting rooms many times listening to people talk loudly after the phone has played a tune - even when there is a sign as you enter that states turn the phone off if possible or else put the phone on vibrate and take conversations out of the room as a courtesy to others, etc. Before cell phones, people left messages and you called them back when you came home or at a convenient time. People did not call for any little thing either - my sister now calls every 5 minutes some days, just to tell me ridiculous things, such as she saw some bird on the fence, there is a sale and she bought new shoes, or she was standing in line forever at a store so decided to call as she was bored. When I am at work I can not see who is calling, so it can be quite annoying after a bit. Other people do the same thing, thinking that because they have a cell phone it should be used as much as possible. Granted, when my daughter calls to ask advice or just to tell me she loves me and was thinking about me, I don't mind as we have that special of a bond (she is 27 now and is married, so the phone is our biggest method of communication). However, if I am with someone or am busy in any way, I will let her know and will call her back when it is convenient for us both if the call is not urgent. I have a cell phone, and it is turned off when I am at work (one of the rules now is to have it off or on vibrate only, as too many people in the office were getting calls and it was obnoxious to hear the rings and songs all the time.) I do use it occasionally, but prefer to wait until I am home to call people unless the situation is urgent or I need to find something out before I get home. It is good for emergencies, but has driven patience right out the door. People don't want to wait for anything nowadays, including having conversations any and everywhere regardless of the rude behavior at times. (People really do NOT want to hear other people's one sided conversations - it is annoying). For the most part, the convenience of cell phones has actually made life a bit more hectic as a person is at the beck and call of everyone who has the number, and they do know a person carries it, so when it is not answered, they think they are being avoided. I know the question was about cell vs pay phones, but the survival thing got to me... I sometimes wish I did not have one, as my life would be a lot less stressful without it - I would survive very well. And, I used a pay phone about a month ago, as I was in a dead zone and I needed help since the car was having trouble. Go figure, that is the reason I got the darn thing!

Yep cause stupid AT&T wouldn't rewire our apartment for a landline phone and we never even got to use the service but it was so retarded because now 4 years later at another residence they send us a bill for $250 when we never even got to use the services. So yes I do remember those costly payphones and the hefty surcharges on prepaid phone cards because it was my form of phone communication for 3 years and it is not fun :-( I love my cell phone :-) even though it is a tracfone it is much cheaper than using a payphone for me anyway. I really like verizon as a landline provider because I can call virtually everwhere in my metro area and it is local so I really like them compared to AT&T I think they are superb because if my home needed rewiring they wouldnt have charged me they would have charged the landlord and it isnt cheap either.

I'm asking myself that question just about everyday! I think the best is seeing 2 people walking together each on their own cell phones!
Perhaps they are talking to each other?
And yes, I remember using pay phones, we use to be able to find them on every street corner. Now when I see someone using one it really stands out.

You're showing how young you are! I remember not only using a pay phone, but also when having a mobile phone was a big deal.
