Currently there are no songs in the music library and I would like all of my songs from the ipod to be transfered to the itunes library. I still want all of the songs to remain on my ipod as well.

Senuti is good for Mac users and free, too.

Then, add the files to your iTunes library.

you can search for sharepod and use that it is free your ipod needs to be on the ahard drive mode so when you open itunes hold control and shift so that it doesnt delete all your music through auto sync

well at least the software is called Senuti (iTunes spelled backwards)
i used it and i recommended it to a friend and it worked both times.
and its free.
and works great.
and it transfers all the metadata as well.
