I use to work at a tanning salon...just don't tan. You can get serious cancers and it is even worse now because the UV rays are so bad, in the tanning bed and in the natural sun.
But now that I've preached...on to your answer (lol) use a tanning oil that has a low SPF but try to get at least a 15. You will get sun if you simple put on sunscreen and layout. Don't try anything stupid like baby oil or crisco....but do consider the fake tans because the new Jergans lotion with the skin bronzers works really well because if you get the lightest lotion, you will get a really nice gradual look.
You can also hit the tanning salons and get tanning bed lotion that has bronzers in it and UV protection ASK IF YOU CAN USE IT OUTDOORS AS WELL!! Never get anything that has a "tingle factor" or that is "hot" it will fry you outdoors. A good one is called Goddess, in a clue bottle but it is kinda expensive but works great and smells great.

I am a natural red head and could never tan until I had my daughter. I guess my hormones changed or something. I used to burn or turn pink and it would turn back to white. I even tried laying in the tanning bed. Now I lay out when it's a sunny day at least 1-2 times a week sometimes more. If you could do it every day for a couple weeks you would probably have a nice tan. People even say I look better with a tan. It's not dark, but I am working on slowly getting a little darker. I started out laying out 30 minutes on each side and have done this for a couple weeks and now am up to 45. Maybe one day I'll get to an hour. If it's cloudy you lay longer. If it's really hot lay less. I use banana boat with SPF 4. That way it has just a little sun screen and I don't burn. The oil is better than the cream, I think it reflects the sun. Spray yourself with water while tanning or take occasional dips in the pool to cool off and make the sun hit you more. Try it this way it's free the tanning bed costs. lol It's been working for me. Good luck.

Yeah.Good idea, people who get fake tans are stupid, and orange.I think there is some sort of ointment (something like that) that helps you get a natural tan.Thats kinda cheating in my words, because I have a natural tan,and I didn't even try.I just go out into the sun alot.

when you go to the tanning place, just ask the women there for her advice. the people there know what times/ level to start you off with depending on your skin type. also ask about the tanning lotions they sell there, chose the best one and that will increase your chances of getting a tan, not a burn. good luck

Honestly, go to Walmart and buy their "No-Ad" tanning oil. Then it's the same old routine... start slow then, fry baby fry. The oil will turn you so dark your skin tone will be reddishblack. Mucho sexy!!
Pardon me for the last statement.
