We don't always wake up with an erection, it is something that is more common during puberty because the hormones are flying. If a man wakes up with an erection it is more likely to be that he was having a sex dream.

Medically speaking, men get erections during the night because their body is trying to keep blood flowing to that area. If the penis does not get blood flow into it (ie. an erection) then it will eventually 'die'. So the body automatically sends the blood there when it's needed. Of course, they could just be having a wet dream too.....

During sleep the pressure on the prostate from the bladder causes the prostate to respond as though it has been sexually stimulated it is the same nervous responce hence you get an errection that goes down as soon as you pee.
