Some controversial subjects:
--gay marriage (lots of recent news articles available)
--abortion
--death penalty
--evolution vs. intelligent design
--the war in Iraq
--stem cell research
All of these topics would require you to defend an opinion, and most of the sources that you would find would be opinions as well. But if you're being asked to write on a controversial subject then your teach is probably expecting opinions.
Find sources that contradict your thesis, as your argument will be stronger if you take them into account.

A thesis paper and a study paper isn't an same element. =P a thesis paper is a paper written by utilizing you and its what you've faith and what you want to teach. a study paper is a paper written by utilizing you the position you do study on a particular topic. im 13 years previous...and that i had to do this project very last week in social study type. =) yet on a diverse topic

I've had to write one of these before.
Death penality...argue for or against it and look and find sources
Abortion...for or against..base it on women's rights and you'll be able to find a lot of info for and against and relate it all to woman's choice and Supreme Court ruling of Roe vs Wade. You could also do your own survy of women to see what they think of abortion "Right or Wrong" and then ask "Would you". That would be interesting to see how many would think its the woman's right then say they wouldn't do it. Your teach would also give you props on the research.
You could do illegal immigration or the Iraq War (aliitle played out) but the illegal immigration is recent and you could look into the issue and see what everyone is fussing about...discuss that and then go on what you've found out about the issue to find other articles relating to the issue.

High heels do such damage to women's legs that they should be outlawed. Also, backs and other health and esteem isssues.
Turst me... it's not a big political statement, but it is very controversial.
