Hey dude, did you get this puzzle from the movie Die Hard:With a Vengeance starring Bruce Willis? That movie has some good puzzles.

Well people, there are some assumptions (which the asker did not state completely). The assumptions are that it has to be EXACTLY 4 gallons AND there is no other place to hold the water.

So no, you cannot just eyeball it or measure two gallong twice.

The correct answer is completely fill up the five gallon, then pour it into the 3-gallon bucket until it fills up. So now, the 5-G bucket has exactly 2 gallons. Empty the 3-G and then put the 2 gallons in the 3-G. Then fill up the 5-G again and pour it into 3-G until it fills up. When the 3-G fills up, you have exactly 4 gallons left in the 5 gallon bucket.

You have a few minutes only otherwise the bomb is going to blowup and kill you and some innocent children in the park.

Oh? Have we been watching the Die Hard movies?
Fill the 5 gallon bucket
Pour water from the 5 gallon into the 3 gallon bucket
(2 gallons left in the 5 gallon bucket)
Throw away the water in the 3 gallon bucket
Pour the 2 gallons left inthe 5 gallon bucket into the 3 gallon bucket

5 gallon bucket is now empty and 3 gallon bucket has exactly 2 gallons.

Fill the 5 gallon bucket again, and pour out water to fill up the rest of the space in the 3 gallon bucket (needs 1 more gallon)
This leaves 4 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket

To waste the least amount of water, fill the 5 gallon bucket with 3 gallons from the other bucket. Then, fill the 3 gallon bucket again and finish filling the 5 gallon bucket. This will leave one gallon in the 3 gallon bucket. Empty the 5 gallon bucket and pour the gallon of water into it and add one more bucket full from the 3 gallon bucket. Voila! 4 gallons.

Fill the 5 gallon buchet and dump it into the three gallon bucket leaving 2 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket.
Dump out the 3 gallon bucket and dump the 2 gallons into it from the 5 gallon bucket. Fill up the 5 gallon bucket and pour into the 3 gallon bucket that already has 2 gallons in it. This will leave 4 gallons in the 5 gallon bucket.
