Many (probably most) have not had the opportunity to interact with other cultures and ethnicities. That is unfortunate due to the fact that the American media has always portrayed "the American way" as top notch. As a result most people assume (incorrectly) that other countries or cultures do not have anything to offer that should be of interest to them. This narrow minded focus causes many to stereotype others from different cultures and backgrounds in an inappropriate manner. As a teacher I try to make sure my students do not share that viewpoint.

Be fair now. Not all Americans do this. And lot's of people from other countries do this too. I guess it's human nature. We Canadians do it too. Not all but some do.

as right as u r, not everyone does it. i don't stereotype people unless they stereotype themselves. like, my friend claims she's emo, so i tell people she's emo. its not a big deal to stereotype people as long as your openminded about them. like, if ur gonna say "i think that person's a prep, so i'm not gonna talk to them", well thats rude. but if u say "i think that person's a prep but i'll talk to them anyway" well thats ok!

People tend to group people up if they are not like them. They separate by race,religon,money,power........etc.
I honestly don't think this will ever change or will change in the future

because anything that does not placate their comfort level, they either, pigeon-hole, criticize, or condemn. i really think it is borne out of a fear of anything different than the dominant culture.
