For the iron, there is no risk persay, unless you're anemic, in which case it could lead to complications for you and baby, in terms of health and fetal growth.
As for prenatal vitamins, with research and what we know today, it's more 'good practice' than anything. Your baby will be fine without them most likely, but if taking the vitamins will make them even 2% more likely to be healthier and better in the long run, then why not take them?
No parent goes, my child isn't worth the best, let's just give them that second rate crib, or that second rate car seat... so why risk doing something that might be better for them?

My prenatal vitamin was contributing to my unending nausea. My OB/GYN switched me to Premesis, a prenatal vitamin that's supposed to help with that. It's very basic: maybe just folic acid and B12?
I also had anemia, but didn't want to take an iron supplement.
i discussed all with my doctor, and she told me that, if I paid special attention to eating right, I didn't need to take anything.
If you really do eat right (no pretending and fooling yourself or your doctor!), the vitamins and supplements are just insurance. If you don't, they're a cheap and easy way to get peace of mind.
You should talk to your doctor.
Folic acid is the big one: if you don't have enough in your diet during early, early pregnancy, your baby has a much higher risk of spina bifida.

My mother didn't take prenatal vitamins for her second pregnancy, which was me. The one who she did take her iron pills with was the one who ended up with anemia actually. And asthma, even though that has nothing to do with it
I came out fine. Except for some lack of pigmentation on my neck. Like albinos, that's what some spots on my neck are. Nevus depigmentosus is what it's called.

he he he ... let ME answer this question for ya.
Chipping, breaking, infected teeth for one. After three kids, I am spending thousands of dollars right now to have my teeth replaced ... all because I didn't take my vitamins. The risks aren't so much for your baby, but for you! The baby will take everything it needs from your body, leaving you depleted. Trust me, you'll be sorry.
I also suffered severe anemia (low iron) after I had my first child, which made me so weak and tired, I was unable to care for the baby on my own. With a normal weight of 120 lbs., I got down to 85 lbs. in 4 short weeks after giving birth. I was a walking nightmare! I was too weak to even swallow food. I had to live on liquids until I got back on track.
Take my word for it ... TAKE YOUR VITAMINS!!!

They are for your health and well being during pregnancy. You should know about the vitamins......and the iron is good for your blood and helps you to be less tired........and your child benefits from your taking them as well. ....If you don't take them, nothing will happen except you won't feel as good....Your child will be fine, a little less healthy maybe, but fine.

Why would you not take them? If you can't swallow the pills, they make chewable pre-natel vitamins. That is what i had to take. I got them at Bronson pharmeceuticals.
