I can't speak for Europeans, but Americans don't have a 'staple' food they eat every day like Asian's eat rice.

Many Americans have bread as a staple food. Europeans...most likely bread, but it could be pasta, too. Some sort of carbohydrate..
I eat rice everyday, too, by the way...=]

Asians are far more frugal when it comes to cuisine, hence using a filler such as rice. That's why when Asian-Americans alter their diet to something more American/European they become a bit fatter than usual.
As far as staple food for Americans and European? I would say a combination of a meat, vegetable, and a starch (potatoes or pasta, sometimes rice).

The staple of a western diet is wheat, ground in to flour. It is used in a variety of foods from the obvious breads, through to pasta and pastry (including cakes and biscuits). Flour is very commonly added to food to make it thicker in everything from stew, soups, seasonings, sauces and preserved meat. Typically a western diet will also take a lot of carbohydrates from potatoes (and other root vegetables) and corn (sometimes eaten fresh, sometimes as corn starch)
