transfering of electrons

when you rub your socks on the carpet, the electrons rub off your socks and onto the carpet
when you touch metal (which has a lot of electrons), they move from the doorknob to you, creating a shock and evening out the number of electrons

There are negatively and positively charged particles in everything. When certain things are rubbed together the particles move from one object to the other. So when your hair goes crazy because of static it is because it has too many of the same particles and they repel each other. I would tell you more but I don't want to fish out my Science 10 notebook.

static charge is developed between molecules in our clothes, body, and the molecules of air and ground we pass through creates friction with tends to accumulate on the mass that is moving, a conductive or grounded spot will cause this charge to fall back into the air and ground.

if the pd is sufficiently high it causes sparks which gives crackling noise
