I have a Toshiba Satellite P35 laptop with an ATI Mobility Radeon 9600/9700 series graphics card. I turned on my computer one time to find that i had a purple vertical line on my screen. Since then, more lines have appeared. I tried reinstalling the driver, but it did not help. The computer is no longer under warranty, and I cannot replace the graphics card. Is there anything I can do to fix this problem short of buying a new computer?

try to use an external monitor to isolate the problem. if the monitor works fine then the graphic card is fine. the lcd screen may have a loose or bad connection. the screen itself is not usually the problem but the connections on the pixel grids. but you have to buy the whole assembly. my advice to you is to pop open the case, trace the graphic card to screen cabling, remove, clean and reinstall. if you are not familiar with opening the case then dont. you may do more harm than good. take it to a helpful knowledgable friend or qualified technician.

This sounds a lot more like a screen failure than a graphics card or driver problem. Try squeezing around the edges of the screen. If any or all of the lines disappear or new ones appear then you need a new LCD panel. Even if nothing happens my first instinct is still that you need a new panel. This isn't that hard to replace yourself but you'll have to pull the old one to get the model number to match it with an exact replacement. Most manufacturers, including Toshiba, use panels from multiple vendors even on the 'same' model laptop.

To find out more if it is a screen or graphics card problem, connect your laptop to an external monitor. Any monitor will do fine see if you can bring your laptop to a friends or ask the IT guys at work. Use the software or function keys to output the video to the external monitor, if you see no lines then it most likely is your LCD screen.
