OK first you should know all interventions (even the routine ones) you have the legal right to say no I don't want it.

an IV isn't medically necessary unless you need fluids because you are dehydrated (you can drink while you labor) or if you are getting pain medication

I would say tell your doctor that you want an unmediated unassisted birth and see what he says, if he flat turns you down find another doctor, also look into a doula who is a professional birth coach and can make it less likely that you will need intervention when you give birth.

You will have to take blood tests that result in vital information for the doctor to be able to treat you during your pregnancy and you will be givin a iv during labor. You have the right to refuse any kind of medical treatment, BUT refusing to do these simple things would make you a bad mother before the baby is born. Also refusing these things will probably make the doctor refuse to treat you. I have a fear of needles and things too, but I went through with it when I was pregnant. I would always break out in cold sweats and get faint around needles, but I just had to get over that to do the right thing for my unborn child. After a few times you will get used to it. Just close your eyes and think of the ocean and what it sounds like, or whatever relaxes you. It is important to have an IV during labor, so that if anything goes wrong they can quickly administer something to help you.

Unfortunately, yes you will have to have one. But the good news is that the pain you will feel from a needle will not even compare to the pain you are about to feel giving birth. The needle is the last thing you should be worrying about.

If you are really dead set against not having an i.v., talk to a midwife and plan an at home birth. The reason they routinely use i.v.'s in hospitals is to guarantee that in an emergency, they can still get medications and fluids into the patient.

If a person goes into shock, it can be very hard to get a vein. Home births, or births that happen in midwife run birthing centers can be less invasive, and calmer.

Sorry but you will have to just accept needles because as far as I know that is the only way to get blood taken and you have to have an I.V. sorry to break it to ya

if you deside to go all natural, with no pain med then no, you dont have to have an iv unless there are complications. good luck though, because if you are scared of needles, the pain of a needle is way less than the pain of having a baby. you can do it though. good luck!

Don't watch them when they put the needle in. Have someone with you and look to the other side and talk with the other person. Don't concentrate on the pick.

You have to have a lot of blood tests drawn throughout your pregnancy to test for various things including gestational diabetes and a test called the alpha feta protein to check for birth defects. While you are in labor you have to have a IV so you don't get dehydrated.

Regardless of the situation, there are ABCs to any kind of imporant medical situation:
open Airways (endotrecheal tubes)
Breathing (monitors)
Circluation (iv catheters)

With these things in place you can have a greater chance of surviving an emergency situation. Better safe than sorry.

No, sweetie, put your mind to rest, you do not have to have an IV. Unfortunatly, this means no pain medicaitions and you will have to remain hydrated. If you become dehydrated at all, they will force an IV for health reasons. If you need a c-section, again, they will force an IV. Also, if you need to be induced for whatever reason, they will force an IV.
