Freon charges vary . All HVAC companies do not charge the same. If it was R-22 more than $l0/lb might be considered excessive. This is a case of caveat emptor (buyer beware). Freon prices are not regulated so the sky's the limit. Check the label on your unit outside. It might tell you the total amount of freon required to fill your A/C.

If you're talking real freon, not the new stuff they're using now, it is extremely expensive. I've heard, over $100.00 per lb. The government has all but outlawed it because of the harm it does to the ozone.

Your unit must have been very low on freon. The typical home a/c unit holds about 6 lbs. of freon. At $11.50 per lb. (which is the typical charge per lb. in my area), thats $69.00. If you have a heat pump, they typically hold about 10 lbs. which makes your cost for freon $125.50

The cost varies from supplier as well as from one area to another. It is very difficult to give price on the information you supplied.
