You can be of Middle Eastern decent and have the sickle cell trait. The fact the the trait is more prevalent in African Americans does not mean that no one else can have it.
Not all college professors have brains--just degrees and sometimes friends in high places.

1- in nursing school we were taught that sickle cell arose in response to malaria. something about the cells being sickle shaped screwed up malaria. This is why people of African decent are most prone to it. It was a genetic mutation in response to a disease. It takes 2 genes (one from mom and one from dad) to cause sickle cell. This is why in America we think of it as an African American disease, because most people who have 2 parents of African decent will look African American.
2. Anyone is able to develop anorexia. It has no boundaries related to age, gender, race, religion, or money

People whose ancestors were from Africa, India, the Middle East, the Mediterranean (Turkey, Italy, Greece), and some Latin American countries are more likely to inherit the gene that can cause sickle cell disease. In the United States, the disease mainly affects African Americans (1 in 650) and Latin Americans (1 in 1,000 to 1,400). 1

sickle cell is most common in African Americans, but others can get it too. It is not impossible for African Americans to be anorexic, anorexia is not race or gender specific.

(1) Other races besides African-Americans get sickle cell anemia.
(2) Here are some facts about anorexia:
"But, other influences, both behavioral and environmental, may also play a role. Consider these facts from the National Institute of Mental Health:
*According to one recent study, mothers who are overly concerned about their daughters' weight and physical attractiveness may put their daughters at increased risk of developing an eating disorder. In addition, girls with eating disorders often have a father and/or brother(s) who are overly critical of their weight.
*Although most victims of anorexia and bulimia are adolescent and young adult women, these illnesses can also strike men and older women.
*Anorexia and bulimia are found most often in Caucasians, but these illnesses also affect African Americans and other races.
People pursuing professions or activities that emphasize thinness - such as modeling, dancing, gymnastics, wrestling, and long-distance running - are more susceptible to these disorders.
*In contrast to other eating disorders, one-third to one-fourth of all patients with binge eating disorder are men. Preliminary studies also show that the condition occurs equally among African Americans and Caucasians. "

As far as anorexia, anyone can have it- there is no gender/race that is immune to it. As far as sickle cell is concerned, people whose ancestors were from Africa, India, the Middle East, the Mediterranean, and Latin American countries are more likely to inherit the gene that can cause sickle cell. In the US it mainly affects African Americans and Latin Americans.

Any race can get Sickle Cell Anemia, however it's more common in African Americans, and Africans. It has to do with their genes, and the way it's passed on through generations.
Anorexia Nervosa is a disease that affects all races, and both genders. No disease is limited to one race specifically, seeing as though we're all part of the same race - nothing fluctuates(other than genes) between us. African American's are in fact able to become Anorexic or Bulemic, but most African Americans are brought up in a culture that is grateful for food, and doesn't starve themselves just to look like their favorite model. African Americans are brought up with something a lot of American children aren't, and thats culture.
America is a pot brewing with hundreds upon hundreds of cultures, and hundreds of ethnicities, and because we're brought up in such a mixed culture with Irish, German, Chinese, Swiss, and anything else you can think of.. we never grow up with a standard/set culture. A lot of Afircan American's have a strong saense of culture, since they aren't so mixed up with Irish, French, Canadian.. they're African-American, some have Irish, or German in their blood too - but as a general rule, they aren't mongrols like most of American society, so they can follow a certain culture.
In Africa, it's not native to vomit food, or to starve ones self just to look better - food isn't always available, so you eat what you can get. For African Americans who are born in the U.S, their parents were most likely brought up that way, as with their parents and so on and so forth.
African Americans CAN get Anorexia Nervosa or Bulimia Nervosa, it's just not common.
