It wasn't a commentator that said that, Jimmie said that about himself during a pre-race interview. But I agree, Mark Martin is the best to have never won a championship.

I didn't hear that. Heck, I totaly block out half of what is said on the air, but I know they did refer to his ability to save cars and even be able to drive a loose car well. With that being said, uhh no.. Princess Jimmie is so not the best current driver and the numbers prove that. First, let's talk facts:
He has no championships, and has been in the circuit for 4 years now. He has 21 total wins. Not a bad number, but there are 4 current full time drivers who beat him out in that number (Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Dale Jarret & Tony Stewart..in that order) Now yes, Mark and DJ have been racing for YEARS longer than JJ and Jeff and Tony have a few years on him. I believe he is ranked 2nd to Jeff on total wins & 2nd to Tony on top 10's (in regards to achieving it during the same time in careers). So to me he'd have to be like the 3rd in regards to achieving it in a certain time. I like Mark Martin, but he's just not the best driver. He's a great guy, and will always be remembered in this sport, but he's not the best driver. Now Jimmie is a good enough driver and I think he will retire as a great in the sport.
Now, I like Jimmie, and am a HMS fan, however Princess is really starting to rub me the wrong way and has come a point in which he needs the "Life is a Team Sport" theory shoved down his throat. To me, being a great driver goes beyond putting down the numbers. Richard Petty will always be great for his numbers, but he will also be remembered for the geat things he did, and the person he was. We all know that Mark holds the trophy on class, and all of his competitors agree. Jimmie is lacking that right now. I think he's getting too hungry, but doesn't have the drive for the win..but just wants to claim a championship. Does that make sense?? I think Jimmie is hitting a spot in his career where he has some growing and learning to do. As someone mentioned I vaguely remember him making a "I'm the greatest" type of comment earlier in the year, and about choked on something for the *********. He'll ind himself hung out to dry with no friends, real quick fast and in a hurry if he keeps it up. I'd really hate to see Jimmie take the low road, b/c as I said I do like him..and I do enjoy seeing him on the track, and I don't want to have to become a 48 hater b/c of the attitude.

Jimmie is good, granted, but I'd have to say MARK MARTIN would be the best current driver who's never won the championship...a racer's racer who drives smart, not over his head..a lot of drivers look up to him..I admire him for being a role model for younger drivers...maybe he ought to have a chat with drivers like Kyle Busch...And to those who say he's not all that because he's never won the Nextel Cup...you need to read the question again, this time all the way through, it asks who's the best current driver who's NEVER won a championship.

I didn't hear them say it but I would tend to agree. Johnson is consistent for the most part week after week and he is winning races. Has Mark Martin accomplished what Johnson has THIS SEASON? Especially since you say the commentator said "best CURRENT driver. And I like Mark Martin by the way.

With the way the #48 team has performed this season, it would be hard to argue that he isn't one of the best drivers this season. If you are talking about the best current driver of all time, that is a different issue. If you are talking about over the long haul, it would be hard to argue against Jeff Gordon or Tony Stewart.

considering who the announcers are during the race,it does not surprise me,,,so bias!!!! Look what some of the other drivers have done this year,,,4 wins for Kasey Kahne from the poll,,,Tony Stewart is doing well(and hurt) Earnhardt Jr is moving up in the points,,,,unless you are leading the points,, you are not a good driver according the idiots in the TV booth,,,,sure wish they would get rid of those jerks,,,some one neutral!!

was the commentator referring to 'best current driver' during the lap they was currently running?
Jimmie is currently the top in points, but he was at the top last year also, and who won the championship?
Year after year Tony goes all the way down in points and rises again, starts races in the back and comes up to win, time after time after time.
That is -in MY opinion IS NASCAR RACING.......
I didn't hear this either, noting everyone's other replies, and also, if anyone deserves to win a championship, MARK Martin does.
I guarantee you if it came up to the last sec, last point, last race and Mark and Tony were tied neck to neck for a championship, I KNOW Tony would back off at the last minute to let Mark win.
Sorry Tony haters, but I KNOW that this would be something Tony would do.
Love my Tony-wony...

Just cause he hasn't won a cup title doesn't mean a damn thing. You don't have to have a cup title to be a good driver. Look at the point standings. Also, look at Dale Jr. he may be a good driver ,but he is still following his dad.

You have to remember the commentators are usually former drivers like DW or former crew chiefs and they are bias. Sometimes they open their big mouths and put their foots in them. If you pay attention whenever something happens to Michael Waltrip, DW makes it sound like it couldnt possibly be his fault. These guys are just human, remember that...
TONY STEWART ROCKS!!!!
