Here's mine : Cover your VIN on the dashboard of your car. Crooks copy the number, take it to a dealership and get a new key cut, no questions asked!!!! What tip do YOU have?

"martin s" I seriously thought of that, but I'm going to take a chance and hopefully help someone. I just ran out to my car to put a piece of paper over the VIN.

If your car is one of those that has an alarm thingie on the keychain, when you go to bed, keep your keys next to your bed. If you hear someone breaking into your house, grab your keys and set off the car alarm. It will be enough to scare the burgler away, and faster than calling 911. Plus, if it's a professional burgler, he or she might have cut your phone line.

When you get a phone call from a telemarketer, or somebody selling something...just ever so politely ask them if they can hold on a sec, while you turn down the TV, then gently lay the receiver on the counter and go about your business. Check back in a few minutes to see if they have hung up yet.

If you want your wooden fence to have a rustic look and be preserved at the same time, don't spend lots of money on stain etc...take a container to your local oil change place and tell them you need some used motor oil, then take that home, and paint your fence with it. The oil gives the wood a rustic brownish gray color, and termites and other creepy crawlies really don't like the taste. It does not smell, and it looks great! Repaint as often as desired.

Pop a few of those fruit flavored hard candies, such as cherry or strawberry, in your cup of hot chocolate, and get a delicious taste treat.

Instead of signing my ATM and other cards, I take a black Sharpie and write "Please see picture ID". It gets a few giggles, and a few annoyed people, but at least they, and I, know it's ME using my card.

Oh, and don't eat yellow snow.

Yes,
During holiday's; when going SHOPPING at the local mall's; either shop with friends ( all going in one car/van to the mall) or if you have to shop alone, ask a security guard to walk/drive you to your vehicle and then check the vehicle to make certain no one is under it or inside it.
Another good tip; for children, NEVER put your child's NAME (even last name) on the outside of their backpacks, lunchboxes, clothing etc. Makes them easy pray if someone knows their name. Use Initials only and create a pass code that the school, your child and yourself know. That way if you have to send someone who is NOT listed as OK to pick up child to pick up your child; you can give them the pass code and before they can remove your child they must say the code to school officials AND your CHILD to verify their identity.
When going on Vacation; Never carry CASH!! Always carry Travelers Checks ( American Express and Visa I believe have security measures should they be stolen or lost not sure about MasterCard ).
When using an ATM machine at night; NEVER get out of your car to go to the machine. If you can't pull up real close to the machine; don't use it! Either wait till morning or find a 24 hr grocery store that has an ATM inside and use it.
Always park under a parking lot light if you know your not going to be leaving before dark.
Never park next to a large Cargo Van or Minivan! If you have to park next to one, get out on the Passenger side of your car (if van is on drivers side that is). Never turn your back on a van, more women have been attacked and pulled into vans when they are trying to get into their cars because they are not paying attention to their surroundings.
Look on line for whistles and purchase the loudest, most obnoxious whistle you can find. Put it on your key chain and carry it EVERYWHERE. I have found the whistles police carry are quite noisy and can hurt your ears if you blow the whistle indoors.

I have more but I think these will do for now *grin*

Buy a shredder and shred everything you get in the mail that has identifying info about you... from credit apps, to mag subscriptions. ID theft sucks. Happened to my mom in law

Here's my tip. Delete your question before some crook sees it who didn't know this and someone's car gets stolen! :o)
