Most cuss words are 4 letters long. So when they say something is a four letter word, they mean it's like a bad word.

That means that word is considered bad to them. A Buddhist might say 'War is a 4 letter word'. A Christian might say 'abortion is a 4 letter word'.
It means that a subject is either taboo, unsavory, or considered bad.
