but that isn't your nationality? For example: I'm vietnamese but I was born in Italy, but that doesn't make me Italian and people always say "so you're italian?" but i'm not. Is there a name for that? There are tonnes of people born in different countries that aren't their nationalities, what is that called? or is there no name?

I think you are discussing two different things here, Nationality is basically where you are registered as a citizen, for example if your parents are Italian citizens and you were born in Italy you are in fact "Italian". It has nothing to do with your race or ethnic background.

You are an Italian born Vietnamese living in the USA. (Canada)
Fancy that, I live in Canada.
Sorry I really don't know if there is a special name for that.

I think you'd call it "ethnic". An ethnic Vietnamese in Italy. A Vietnamese-Italian. Be proud of it too.

that all depends on what citizenship each of your parents were and if they were married or not, if they registered your birth at the consulate or embassy, the length of time away from home country, etc.
Americans born abroad to citizens with all the legal documents are called nationals
