having sailed thru there 7 times doing yacht deliveries.....the Sargasso Sea coincides with an area of usually light and fluky winds called the Horse Latitudes.....little wind, and lots of seaweed.........not a huge island sized impenetrable mass of seaweed, but clumps, some as big as as say, a football field....so you can sail into one clump on a dying breeze, get slowed to a stop.........when the wind comes up again, you can sail away, very slow.y. having to clear any weed that has gotten tangled in your rudder...

yes. the Sargasso Sea is mainly seaweed and can ensnarl smaller ships by getting caught in the rudder and prop
