NOTE: This is based off a normal Yahoo! Fantasy Football team you draft, without joining a created league. Otherwise there are tons of variables that come into play.

Step 1: Where are you drafting?
There's a big difference between drafting 1st and 10th. If you are in the top 3, you are going to get a stud RB (Alexander, L.Johnson, Tomlinson come to mind). Once you get past that, multiple strategies present themselves. The one thing I would NOT do in the first round is take a WR...you do that, he gets hurt (Javon Walker anyone?) and you are SCREWED.

In picking 10th (as I did in one draft) I was able to get Lamont Jordan and Chad Johnson, who at that point was IMO the #2 WR on the board next to Owens. I knew that coming back around I could get a decent value at RB and fill my QB need as well.

Step 2: Balance!
As many people have said, the 2 RB strategy will help you, as there are only 32 starting RB in the NFL. If you are in a 10 team league that starts 2 RB a week, you can do the math. Someone is going to end up on the short end, especially when you consider not all of those RB's will put up numbers.

However you do it, you MUST get a RB in the first two rounds. Otherwise, this position will kill you all season!

Don't forget about your TE! A lot of people neglect this position until there is a sudden run on them. In particular, you can probably get Ben Watson or Vernon Davis in the 11th or 12th rounds, and they will give you solid value at that pick.

Which brings me to this one...

Step 3: Do NOT draft a DEF/K before round 13!!!
I see SO MANY people do this...WHY??? These guys are the ones who end up having players get hurt and have no depth on their bench to survive. I didn't pick any DEF/K prior to round 12 and here's who I got: Jacksonville, Washington and Matt Stover, all solid at those positions. Someone will ALWAYS jump though and take Chicago in round 4 or 5. What do you think happens to them if Urlacher goes down? in the meantime, their opponents load up on quality position players and beat them in the end.

Whatever you do, don't pick a K until round 14. This position is a wildly fluctuating one, with a top kicker one year finishing 4th or 5th the next. If you get one of the top 10, you will be fine. Kickers don't win FF leagues, QB and RB do!

Step 4: Do you research!
I've won probably 6-7 FF leagues in my life, and I wouldn't have had a chance if I didn't research first. ESPN, CBS Sportsline and others have great links to a top 100-200 list, top players at their positions, players to avoid and sleepers. I suggest looking over these, compare and then use your judgment (for example: Philip Rivers has tons of weapons, but will he adjust well to starting in the NFL? You could get him late (like rounds 10-11) and go after your other positions, or take a more proven QB earlier on and pass.)

Step 5: HAVE FUN!
If it gets too stressful, you won't enjoy it. Do your best, research pick and have fun!

I like to choose a RB in the first round, since that position has so few real starters and usually takes up more spots on your roster. Then, depending on league settings, I would choose the best player available. In the second round, that turns out to be another RB or a QB. Then, if you need a TE, go with that in the third, since there only exists two to three that are even playable. Fill out the rest of your roster with the best available from then on. I don't go with WR early because every NFL team starts two, and some three, so that position is deep. The later-WR strategy doesn't tend to work in yahoo public leagues, since you must start three WRs. I hope this helps!

Go with RB in the first round ... then either super elite WR or another RB in round two ... if you go for the WR in #2, take a RB in the third; if it is the other way around, then grab the best available WR off the list.

Usually QBs and TEs are drafted somewhere between rounds 5 & 7 ... but also be aware for excellent backups, especially RBs (you have to concern yourself with BYE weeks)

DEF and Kickers are very late rounds (when you reach the the last 4 or 5 rounds, then fill those last spots).

No one strategy will work for all leagues. My best advice is to look at how the league commissioner has set the scoring and figure out which positions will be the most valuable and focus on them in your draft first. There's no point drafting a RB first if your league's scoring is set up to favor QBs ... for example if completions are one of the point categories. You might end up getting LaDainian Tomlinson with your first pick only to find out that RBs aren't even as valuable as WRs in your league.

A tip I've found helpful is to go into the Player page before setting your draft order and sort the players by points scored the previous year based on the league's scoring system.

In many leagues, your team defense may be your highest point getter. People tend not to draft defenses in the early rounds trying to get the glamour position players first, but if you get the most bang for your buck with a defense, it can make sense to draft one early -- again, all depending on your league's scoring.

I like to go RB-RB the first two rounds. This gives you a good cornerstone to your team(unless there's better value somewhere else). After the first 2 rounds its BPA. You just have to ask yourself when it's your pick, "Is this guy a reach at this current spot?" If you answer yes then pick someone else. Also remember that it's about getting the most points so just try to get the best value at whichever pick you have.
