This is sports, where even the best teams can lose and the underdogs can win. Consistency is the game here, and if the best team can't be consistent, they face risk of being defeated by underdog teams.
I'm not necessarily saying that Portugal is an underdog team, but the point is, anyone can defeat anyone in football (and in other sports generally)
Brazil has played quite well, although not good enough to defeat France ... It doesn't change the fact that they're a good team ... everyone will still consider Brazil as one of the best teams in the world. They shouldn't be ashamed of themselves ... they can continue to hold their heads up high ...
Bravo Ronaldo, Ronaldinho cs.

For a very successful football nation like Brazil, every generation would be expected to emulate the achievements of their predecessors. Any team that falls short of the cup have many other Brazilian teams to be compared with so even a relatively good run could end up being described as a failure.

The problem with Brazil is the belief they had that "winning is in their blood, whether they play or not". The last quarterfinal match concurs that. The only match they played their sport was against Japan. None of the other matches, if you have closely watched would prove that World Cup was not meant for them.

I must say Brazil played bad.
They have great individual players, but do not play well together as a team.
