The Movie is Taps....

It had Timothy Hutton and Tom Cruise

George C. Scott oversaw the Campus, and Tom Cruise's character died in the last few minutes shooting at the tanks with a machine gun. Was made in the early 1980's, like 1981 or 1982.

Yes, it was Taps...it was centered around Westpoint Academy with cadets of various ages and yes it starred Timothy Hutton, but I don't remember Tom Cruise being in it. Of course it was filmed in the early 80's before Cruise was Cruise.

I have never seen TAPS but I have seen Toy Soldiers which fits your description. It involved terrorists overtaking the school and the "problem" student finding a way to save the school with his other deliquent friends.
