No, I wouldn't go right out and lie and say it is cute if I didn't think so. I would however, say something nice like, "oh the baby has his daddy's eyes," or "I bet she will grow up to be just as cute as her big sister or her mommy." This way, you are still paying a compliment but are not hurting any feelings or lying.

Of course. You have to compliment it, seeing how this child is the pride and joy of the parents! Imagine someone telling you that the thing you love the most, and are extremely proud of, is the worst looking thing they've ever seen! It would break your heart...especially if it's something that doesn't really matter. Those parents will never believe their child is ugly, so why say something just to hurt them....?

If it's ugly - just look at the parent and say "Awww he/she looks just like you!" then you don't have to tell them the kid is ugly or cute and you can say something that will make them happy.

That would be lying. I just say that the baby has pretty eyes, how much I love the outfit, or that the baby looks just like its mother or father.
