Thanks for your answers so far. But from what some of the responses seem to be saying, I get the impression a lot of you believe USA to be a perfect society, one which we all must aspire too; am I correct ?

I really do not celebrate, but I have used it as an excuse to fire some small caliber handguns I used to own. They sound enough like fireworks, it's a good cover.
But I am sort of "between" guns right now.
I celebrated my own Independance on April 2, '98 with my first tattoo. This July 4th, I have an appointment for tattoos 14 and 15.

I really never thought about what it was for, it was just firecrackers day when I was a kid. And as a young adult I just liked to go to the displays and eat barbque and get a paid day off.

But after 911 I changed somewhat or rather a whole lot in my attitude about my country. I live in the United States Of America.
I am free, I am able to live with out fear of my life from foreign invasions because my country is strong and if there is a problem on the other side of the world, we go to the problem and try to stop it from spreading to us and others.
I have had supper tonight as well as breakfast. I have a bathroom, I have so many clothes I have to give some away to be able to buy more.
If I commit a crime my 10 year old sister will not be raped in front of me by soldiers as punishment . I am an American. I never realized that the fact I was born in America as a blessing I received at my birth and have kept with me forever.
I do not live in a trash pile and drink from a tin can of water with wiggle tails in it.
I am proud to be an American and yes as of Sept 11, 2001 I celebrate my freedom and independence from religious and prejuical discrimination. Thank you God !

Years ago for fun! For some time when I celebrated it as an adult it was for the freedom of being an American. But, as time passes by and they slowly remove our "freedom" this nation was founded upon, I've resorted to not celebrating it at all. I would rather celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ and His resurrection to heaven any day of the week and any time through the year. Communities don't gather together to celebrate the freedom God has given us, they gather to have an excuse to drink beer and have wild parties. So no I don't celebrate July 4th.

I celebrate just for fun, watching how the kids get so excited...but I must say once the fireworks begin and start lighting up the sky with all the beautiful colors, I can't help but shed a tear and at that point I always think of that song by Lee Greenwood...

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I won't forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

That is what I hate about 4th of july. Everyone goes out and celebrates with beer and fireworks. But most of them don't even realize why they are celebrating. I celebrate beacuse it is fun and for my independance.

I don't really celebrate but I am thankful for that fact that we live in a free country. In America a child can grow up to be anything he wants, and not everyone in the world can say that.

Just for the fun of celebrating. I love this country, but sometimes I do not feel that I am "free" in America.

Independence? bah, kids now a days just celebrate because they get to see pretty fireworks. Or because everyone else is doing it.

No need for those fancy fireworks, just hang your American flag proudly somewhere out side of your house and salute the flag, and thank your ancestors.
