voice lessons would definitely help--only a teacher in person can really demonstrate proper singing techniques. The reason the voice cracks is because it does not have proper support and therefore cannot withstand the air pressure. However, if you bring the support from the whole body rather than just the throat the bernoulli effect (same thing that makes airplanes take off) will do a lot more of the work for you.

in other words...good singing should feel easy and not strained.

p.s. speaking softly is actually worse for your voice. Speak at a normal volume...but it is good to keep hydrated.

You need to learn to support your notes with proper breathing techniques. Here is a quick fix to get you started. Sit up straight, and put your hands on you side, pressing into your waist. Take a deep breath. If you did not feel anything, most likely you are concentrating your breathing in your chest. This time take a deep breath, but tighten your stomach as you breathe in. You should feel you waist muscles expand againist your hands.

That is your diaphram working. When you rehearse, make sure you are working that muscle out. You will find yourself able to sustain those notes better. Also, the more you just practice singing , the stronger the vocal cords get. Good luck!

Training. Sounds like you're straining as a result of poor breath control. Take a some voice lessons and you'll get it under control in no time.

Good answers except for the first one. Also, you may have strained your vocal cords. Rest them whenever you are not singing, speak softly ALL THE TIME, and drink lots of water to re-hydrate.

It shouldn't be forced, I used to have the same problem my freshman year, relax more, and let it come out on it's own. Don't force it.
