It's up to you. If you're comfortable with it, then sure. Babies certainly don't need the sugar, but it's only one day. However, if you prefer *not* to give baby any, then that's fine, too...

That is the point of a 1st birthday party to see the baby stick his hands into the cake and feed himself. The pictures are priceless.

As long as he doesn't have any allergies to any of the ingredients ( milk, eggs, etc.) then by all means! I would read labels of mixes and store bought cakes for any traces of peanuts, though. Children this age can still develop nut allergies due to overexposure. Other than that, enjoy his birthday, let him eat cake, and make sure you have cleanup supplies! Remember, this is a special day for you too, you've just completed year one of the mommy marathon!

My younger son's first birthday was yesterday and he had a piece of cake...store bought yellow cake with white frosting. It's been about 24 hours now and he's perfectly fine. :) Same thing with my older son...and he lived to tell about it. If your baby has blood sugar issues, it's probably not a good idea.

I am a parent of 2 and I gave both of them cake. I would suggest that you don't give him a very big piece, that way he doesn't get a tummy ache.
But let him enjoy the great taste of cake and ice cream. It will not hurt. ( like I said, small portions is best)

Of course it's ok to give your child cake on their 1st birthday! Enjoy every minute of it too! Have your camera close by!

It's fine, but you might want to think about one of the healthier cakes. I made my daughter a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting for her first birthday. Applesauce cake is a good option too. www.epicurious.com has some really good recipes.

By one, your baby should be eating solids already (whether or not he has teeth), like Gerbers peas and carrot, potato, etc. So, a piece of birthday cake is fine. I let both of my daughters at their cakes and they loved it.
With any solids, as long as the pieces are not too big that they'll choke, then it's all fine...

Yes it would be okay. The whole fun is to let him dig into a piece of cake. He'll get more on his face and hands than in his mouth.

I was worried about that also when my son turned one. I was nursing him and giving him only wholesome, fresh, healthy foods, but yes I did allow him a little cake. He is 15 now and it didn't hurt him a bit. Have a fun day!
