It really depends upon what you are intending to use it for, if you are planning to use it with great frequency and if you need fax capabilities.
If you are going to be a heavy user, printing a lot of photographs and graphically intense material. go with an epson, you will find the cartridges to be a slightly better value and higher capacity.
An occasional user who isn't going to chew through mass quantities of ink would be well suited to an HP. You are always getting good quality with an HP, however the cartridges can get quite expensive. Hp is also notorious for under-filling their cartridges.
If you need a work horse completely multi function with fax/phone/printer/scanner/copi... and are not to fussy about printing top notch photographs a brother is always a sounds choice. The cartridges are usually cheap, the printers are usually cheap however they don't provide the same outstanding quality of the HP or Epson.

I've used three HP Multifunction units (PSC 1300, 1400, and 6100 series). They work great. They come with sofware that helps you to scan, copy, and print images. The ink cartriges are a little pricey, but if you get multipacks, then (at Staples) return the empty ones, they get a lot more affordable. The one time I had a problem with one of them, they shipped me a new one using overnight mail, and sent a prepaid box to return my broken unit. It worked great.

Go with a canon. they work perfectly and the ink is cheaper than anyone else's. There are 3 color cartridges, and a black cartridge. When one goes empty, you can simply replace/refill that one cartridge. They are very east to refill also. I have had a multipass f30 for several years, and have always been very happy with it. You won't find a cheaper price per print available. Remember, it doesn't matter if they give away the unit if the ink cartridges are incredibly expensive.
