I would vote on ICEHOUNDXX answer as the best answer since there is only one Rhode Island(s) and it is not even an island.
(1)

Outside of that I would go with one of the 4-500 numbers a whole bunch of Rhode Island size states could fit in an area of the state of Alaska

answer 1: It depends on how deep the hole is. I wouldn't dig Rhode Island out deeper than sea level.

answer 2:The ratio of square miles of each is about 328 times. 2000 for Rhode Island, 656425 for Alaska.

answer 3: The problem with fitting Rhode Islands into Alaska would be the shapes don't match. Little bits of Alaska would still not be covered. Ratio would be less than 328 to 1. At least you could put 250.

1 - since there really is only ONE Rhode Island (you can't replicate or duplicate such a fine state), so it is just that simple. Drop Rhode Island in the middle of Alaska, and you have enough room for some more New England states.

Area of Rhode Island = 1545 square miles
Area of Alaska = 570374 square miles
so Number of rhode islands can be fit in alska
n = 570374 / 1545 = 369.17411
so it's about 369 Rhode islands
Note : I use only land area for both
