Sounds like a sound card problem.
If you have Windows XP, click Start, then right-click My Computer and choose Properties. Then choose Hardware-->Device Manager and see if anything in the list has a yellow or red icon beside it. If it is there and it's listed under something related to sound, you may need to reinstall the drivers for your sound card. The drivers can be found either on the CDs that came with your computer or from the sound card manufacturer's website.

Make sure the Sound card drivers are propperly Installed, You should take assistance of a friend who can help you out with this.
Also ensure that the speakers are working, try plugging them to other devices like your cd-man, walkman or a radio..
This should solve your problem.

Are your speakers self amplified? Do they need a power source ? If they have no power power plug that might be your problem. Some mother boards with a built in sound card/chip use self amplified speakers. Ran into this problem before. Good luck.
