I do everything that you are suposed to do to take care of my hamster. I buy chew toys and play with it daily. Just the other day I got my hamster Peanut out of his cage and he bit me. I've had him since about April. He has never bit me before. I just got him out a while ago and he bit me again. He also bit my brother. I gethim out often. I don't know what I'm doing wrong and I want to fix the problem because I don't have any other pets.

Try washing your hands before you handle the hamster. They might nip if you smell like something tasty. Also, avoid hand-feeding anything to your hamster.
Hamsters are temperamental, and sometimes bite for no apparent reason. There's not much you can do, except be patient and love them anyway.

my cousin's hamster did this again the other day, my mom had made peanutbutter sandwiches for lunch and stewie started chewing hard on my mom's finger nail but stopped after she had washed her hands again.

my hamsters used to do this if they were disturbed, I smelled like food, or if they had gotten overly excited. I had a hamster before that would only bite if she had to go to the bathroom and was out of the cage. I had one who would bite if he was woken up, even if it was to offer him a treat. And all of them would bite but not hard if my hands smelled like puppy biscuits or carrots. He hasn't been around you for all that long really, he may just need to be left along for a week or 2 and try taming him again gradually introducing yourself to him again. I have heard of that happening out of the blue to some people.

Good luck.

Peanut for some reason does not want to be handled. It could be he/she has reached adulthood and is getting aggressive. Do not stop handling him, wear a leather glove to take him out of the cage. When outside and you are not holding him it should be okay. If the biting continues I'm afraid you will have to get rid of him.

Some hamstes don't like to be handled. if you don't want to get bitten I'd suggest leave him be or wear thick leather gloves when you handle him. I have a pet rat and find that I trust my rat way more than I ever would a hamster. Perhaps that would be a better pet after peanut passes away.

are you sure that it is a male instead of a pregnant female? Do you have any other hamsters in the same tank? Is it hot where you live cause he might not feel like being bothered---start by placing you hand in the cage and NOT trying to catch him for a few days and see if hat helps---if he is too hot, he ight get gritchy just like we do and he may not feel like being handled---remember our body temp is 98.6 to start with

Well a "him" isn't pregnant, now is it? So we can rule that out. Start washing your hands with soap (bar kind and not fruity smelling either) and then use a hand sanitizer, that will help cover any "food" smell you might have or even a "preditor" smell. Besides that only other advice I have is to use something else to get him out, like a big spoon. Let him relax and walk onto your hands all by himself. It could just be he feels threatened.

Perhaps he just wants some privacy. Does he seem willing to be picked up at the time? Hey, if I were a hamster, I might sometimes bite people who picked me up, too.
