I had a nightmare of a squid eating me... They have those horrible beaks that can bite through metal. Does it scare you?

I suppose a giant or colossal squid (yes, "colossal squid" is the name of a species) could theoretically eat you if you confronted it, but you would have to dive very, very, very deep into the ocean to do that, because they don't live anywhere near the surface. And even if you could go down there in person (I'm not sure that's possible), you'd probably be wearing so much equipment that you might not seem very appetizing to them. Smaller squids would probably be more afraid of you than you'd be of them. So while I agree that the image is frightening, I think you can rest easy.

By the way, squids are highly intelligent (as are octopuses), and some species (such as cuttlefish) have even shown playfulness with humans.

I am not scared. I fish with squid, it is an excellent bate. I think we would hear of the frightening stories of people being attached by squid if it had happened. I do know that giant squid do exist, though no one has seen one alive-we find the dead carcases on shores every once in a while.
To get over your fear I recommend you go to a local restaurant that serves Calamari. This is squid and it is quite tasty. If you are served the kind that has the whole bodies you can pull them apart and make little screaming noises. It can be very amusing and I think your fear will leave.

There are no records of this occuring. The giant squid, may be able to consume a human, but one has never been found alive. Only beached on the shore. The stick to eating other things.

I would suggest staying out of the water...they are called the Humboldt Squid. They live for about a year. Actually, they have attacked humans and if I recall...some have died from these really small squid in Australia. They have been captured and are being studied.

We had a squid expert on one of our talkback shows. He said that the giant squid would attack you, kill you and eat you if you confronted one in the sea.

The giant squid has thousands of tiny hooks on its tentacles and once they get you, it drags you to a very large, sharp beak, about 20 times larger than an eagle's beak. You will be mincemeat in no time.

The qiant squid attacks 50 foot Sperm whales, so it would have little trouble with you or me.

No. Squid eat fish, crustaceans, and other squid.
They are carnivores so it would be possible to eat people but because the esophagus runs through the brain, the food must be in small pieces before swallowing. In order to eat people, they would have to be extremely large squid. I wouldn't be scared because it would be extremely unlikely.

yes squid eat people every day. it's awful and very messy. the first person ever eating by a squid was a man named edward squideatme. he was swimming in the ocean( oct. 25th 1912 ) of the coast of california. his bigest mistake was wearing a swim jersy with his last name on it. he left behind a wife and two small sons. tragic, isn't it?
