Is is simpler to purchase an internal DVD burner and install it (I'm around intermediate level with computer knowledge, but don't really know the components inside the computer), or to buy an external and spend a few more bucks? Thanks.

YES you will need to open up your PC to install the drive.
as others have said it is a very easy process to install the drive.

you need to open the PC case
locate a free drive bay to put the drive in.
if you have a cd-rom for example already but your out of space to install your DVD then remove the CD-rom and instal the DVD in it's place.
yo mayalsoned to buy a drive cable probalybest to open your computer befor buyigto see exactlywhat you need.
if you're not happy about installing and buying the right hardware take it to your local retail outlet that specialise in pc components there will normally be someone around who will be able to offer you the best advice and may be able to install the drive for you instore.
but as we have all said you can easily do it yourself.
with a screwdriver and a little self confidence.
all you need to do is look at how your other drives are connected.
the DVD drive will come with what is known as a Jumper on the back edge with the rest of the connections. if it's not already set the jumper (pull it off and move it and re-fit the same way) over the setting marked CS or cable select. this should then be a trouble free install.
once the hardware is installed you cant go wrong.
normally you have the power cable and the data cable both with a red cable or a cable with a red stripe. in normal instalatins these red stripes sit next to each other as close as the connections allow that is.

once the hardware is installed it's time to reboot your pc and then enter your system bios to check the drive is found and identifying itself correctly. if it is come out of your system bios and let the system boot to your operating system. once done your drive should be installed automaticaly, your system might ask you to reboot to make the new hardware availble for use. do as instructed and re-install nero or what ever DVD burning software you prefer to use if your new drive is not available when you run your buringsoftware following installation of the new drive.

your now done and should have many years of happy dvd burning.

i hope i've helped even a little.

It's not that difficult to install an internal burner. I'm assuming you're replacing an existing drive, right? If so, use the Device Manager to uninstall the old drive. Then shut the pc down and unplug it, and then remove the old drive once you've got the case open (be careful not to drop the screws into the case), un-plug the connectors from the old drive, and plug the connectors into the new one. Before you seal the case back up, plug it back in, and see if Windows recognizes the new hardware and correctly installs the drivers for it. Then seal the case back up. If you think you can handle that, then get the internal. If not, get an external, probably one with a USB feed. Good luck.

You can use an external dvd burner but it wont be as fast as an internal one. Its really simple.. take the cover off your pc, and you will see your cd rom. Theres a jumper cable attached 2 it and a power plug. Unscrew the 2-4 screws that holds it in its cradle, unplug the jumpers and it slides out. Then place your burner inside the cradle and attach your jumpers you just unplugged to it.Tighten your screws back and replace your pc cover. the process takes about 5 minutes and all you need is a phllips screwdriver. Happy Burning!

You gotta open up your computer, why would they call it internal then. Its really easy to install. But, the external may be better cuz then the software may come with it as well, while you may have to locate the driver for the burner onthe internet which may take a while and be boring. I say go external, it'll get you to the fun a whole lot quicker.

Installing a DVD is pretty simple. But, if you have never done it, I recommend watching someone do it and pay the extra bucks. Once you have seen it done, you will be an expert for life.

Depending on the DVD you bought, sometimes, when they translate the instructions from Chinese or wherever into English, a lot is missing from the translation.

I hope this helps.

Internal isn't hard to install it's just two connections. The power and info source. The problem you may run into is if you have more than one. Then you'd have to mess with the slave settings. If your not willing to do research just buy an external.

Depends on what you buy.

There are internal ones and external ones. I bought an external one and could not send things to the burner, so it did not work, so I returned it for my money back. Of course I had to pay a restocking fee. Then got an internal one, and everything worked hunky-dorey.

I would go with an internal DVD player. Cheaper and takes up less desk space.
Most DVD's sold for computers come with instructions on how to install them in your computer.
If you are hesitant or don't have any idea, it's best to bring it to a computer shop and have them install it for you.
It's well worth it.

all you have to do is open the cover and if you have an open bay then it will bolt right in,if not then unbolt your cd rom and use this slot, connect the leads which is just a plug for the power and one cable going to a computer port, now if it is not a plug and play then you will need to install your software and drivers for it but that is simple.most will just plug in and work.

good luck
