In an earthquake, if you are driving, stop the car in a safe place and sit and wait for it to stop. DO NOT GET OUT OF THE CAR. Unlike a tornado or a hurricane, an earthquake is the shifting of plates deep in the earth, the shaking will subside.

There is no good answer to this. In the earthquake in San Francisco in which the Nimitz bridge collapsed, they found pockets in which they say if people had gotten out of the car and lied on the asphalt, they would have survived. However, if you were on the top level and you got out of the car, you would have been killed. I wouldn't get out of my car and run into a building; who knows what kind of rubble is toppling from the buildings? A cement parapet could collapse and kill you, or power lines could come loose and electrocute you. I think the best advice is to stay calm and think rationally.

Uh... in my thoughts I think it's better off safe in a building then a car. Umm... let me think again back to the earthquake drills,,, yeah building is better!
However, I wouldn't dare to attempt a heroic scene of running out the car, I'm better in the car then. Just stop to safety place and wait till it's all calm. Do the 60 sec drill, elementary school education should finally pay off.

By the way, Happy (belated) Canada Day! (Vancouver BC)... stay safe.

I would think it was safer to stay in a car and keep moving to try and get away. But not too fast. Because a building has a chance of falling down and killing everyone trapped inside. Don't totally trust me on this, though. ;)

If you are on a street with tall buildings it might be sager in a doorway. If you are in a more rural area it might be best to get out into an open area. Earthquakes can causes cars to be thrown through the air. And buildings can fall on them.

staym in the car and keep it running so that you can move quickly if you have too
also you are in a protected shell

the safest places in a house is under the doorposts you got a concrete beam above your head to protect you
never in the middle of a room.
in an earth quacke every thing turns to liquid ,a very dis orienting feeling

most people just sit and hold on to the ground

got a lot of earth quackes where i am and some times the house rattles like a machine gun .
we ususall just sit it out ,being acustomed to it .if it is very bad ,the best place is away from the house

but if the garden has lots of coconut palms like mine does .falling coconuts can also be very dangerous

According to the Red Cross: If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place. Stay in the car until the shaking stops.

Seeing as how the car could possibly sink if the pavement collapsed it would be wise to leave the car and find a door way to stand it. Don't forget the car is also filled with gas.

During the quake, move to the closest available open area and stay in the car. It's a protection against things falling on you.
