Much of the hip hop had cleaner lyrics and were very positive back in the early 80's.

Four essential things are sorely lacking in mainstream hip hop (if we can even call it that) compared to 15 years ago:

- VARIETY. It's kinda like going to McDonald's and seeing nothing but fries on the overhead menu. There's barely anything truly different in the mainstream anymore.
- SUBSTANCE. To hear most current mainstream rappers tell it, you'd think there was nothing else to talk about other than money, drugs/alcohol, sex, jewelry, and "who-shot-who."
- GREAT BEATS. I mean, really - can we put some effort into it, dang it? Y'know, as opposed to some 8-bit Casio sounds and stock MPC drums?
- SKILL. Damn...what happened here? Truly skilled MC's (not rappers - there's a difference) are an endangered species about now.

Good thing I was introduced to underground hip hop a few years ago (which, by the way, still retains the four elements I mentioned above). Otherwise, I'd still be sittin' here with Midnight Marauders on repeat, reminiscing about the good ol' days - lol.

When rapping got started, it talked about the hardships of growing up in the ghetto.

Now, hip-hop is celebrating all of the negatives of the ghetto life. Trying to a gangster, living the fast life, wasting money on bling, disrespecting women, etc.

It's a kind of self-hate because it's saying that Black people can't achieve success through normal lives. .

First of all, the language you hear in today's hip hop is more brutal and they way they disrepect the women they show and talk about is something that is unnecessary. The one thing that has always bugged me about today's hip-hop is if they are so talented, why don't the ALL write their own music?

There is far more light-hearted, pop rap nowadays. About grinding, getting laid, checking out women, and obsessing over material possessions. It's sad, because the songs are so degrading. They are also WAY more cocky and arrogant. I have stopped listening to a lot of it because they act as if they are gods. They have the bling, the money, the rides (why don't they use that to feed starving kids in Africa), and the women. Well, they don't have ALL of the women!
