A recent TV program featured Buffet's grandaughter, who works as a nanny. She said she was given the best education by her family, but no more. She was told that she was given the tools to make her way in life, but it was up to her to go on from there on her own. When asked if she resented this, she said, 'no; although a little more money would help."
This coincides with Buffet's statement accompagnying his charitable donation, that he is opposed to people who think they are superior &/or are afforded special advantages merely by virtue of their having a wealthy family.

Wonderful! I am just waiting for a bunch of the compassionate conservatives in the Bush administration to follow his lead.

He told his children and relatives from the beginning that they wouldn't inherit big money from him, so while some of them may be a bit bitter, they can't claim he lead them to believe otherwise. I think it's interesting that his ego would allow him to give his money to the Gates' charitable group. He's right, of course, that setting up his own trust would just be "reinventing the wheel" but most people who are able to amass great fortunes have to have great egos. His money won't be distributed under his name, and that's what most people find so surprising.

It's good to see horribly rich people go back to the old ways of massive philanthropic divesting of their wealth instead of passing it on to the next generation. It used to be that while the parents may set you up to do well, you were on your own to do it and not just wait for them to die to get rich.
