Its not that they "own" it in a sense, any website business out there can host the same name as long as its not taken by anyone, they just happened to have "claimed" it, example if company A was hosting website B for sale and someone inquired company C if it was for sale and found that it was, company C could sell it and Company A couldnt do anything about it because it is a free domain space, company A just found it and decided to claim it, for company A didnt pay anyone for it because it was free domain, which means he doesnt legally "own" it and it can be sold by another company
an exception to this is if ebay sold their website, then a company can host it as "for sale" but there would be a copyright notice at the bottom showing the website is owned and was bought off of someone

Its called domain squatting. The people who own those sites are hoping to make money selling the site to people who want the site. They will get urls for things becoming popular, and then try to sell those urls.

Because they had nothing else to do and beat you buying the name of the site first.
While really serious people didn't have time to purchase the name in a timely manner.
Stupid answer, but true! I struggle buying good names for my sites too... all already taken!

They're trying to sell them and also make a little change from ad clicks.It takes a lot of time and money to set up a great web site.
