Though Socrates admitted to his guilt, it would seem that this was a ploy to test for levels of Justice in his society. Can criticism be healthy when one considers one's State and Society? This is the focus of this question.

Philosofers see both sides of truth and like none. Socrates was a heck of a philosofer yet had no order or knowledge in his house. The thing was the lawyer of Athens insisted Socrates would provide some entertainment and funds on children with no resources and parents. He denied not yet without lying efforted little and entertained them a lot, talking about knowledge and its futility on beliefs. Even then some priests did have a huge belly and liked the good miths, they did not have to make them very much as now, and wanted Socrates head on a platter with some gyros on it, or some. He did not defend himself, he rather insisted he betrayed nobody and helped the lawyer, the lawyer did not punish yet insisted he would drink some cicuter to calm the worshipers, who would pay him later for funds returned, think of it as laundering with education.
The whole deal was indeed known, but good Socrates did have his portion, and died not from it for he drank too goat milk with it, he actually died four years and three months after the sorrow mount. He wrote Wounds and Care Givers on behalf of philosofy and man thinking, something actually hated and cared not by tourists. Baby on board!

Your question is not clear.

Socrates questioned everything, hence "the socratic method". By questioning The State, he incurred its wrath. Because he challenged ego by showing it for a fraud.
Ego just hates it when that happens.

Were is he when we need him? Do present day Socrates have a hard time getting air time? Or does it fall to me, the casual observer?

According to Plato's account of Socrates' trial, Socrates admitted it.

Questioning anything and everything is ALWAYS a good thing!!! Guilt has nothing to do with it.
