a dell or a xp

Regular unless you REALLY need the portability. By the way, Dell is a brand and XP is an operating system. But anyway, yea, I go to college and have a regular computer. Most students have laptops, but most hold much less information and have a tendency to break easier. If you spill your soda on the keyboard, the whole thing is fried, where on a regular comp, you can just buy a new keyboard for $5. And I know sooo many people that had problems with Dell laptops. One friend made me swear on my own grave that I'd never ever get a Dell because hers crashed 6 times in 2 months and she had to have it replaced everytime, and she lost everything on it permanently each time.

Unless you really need to carry it around, get a regular PC. You can upgrade to a flat screen monitor for like, $100 which will save you a lot of room on your desk too. It also comes up to a lot cheaper (depending on the brand obviously). Maybe $600 or $700 for a good PC as compared to $1000 for a good laptop.

I'd also suggest Best Buy for either type of computer. They'd give you the best deals and best warranties. They're also really helpful and have no problem trying to find upgrades and substitutions to suit your needs. CompUSA will have whatever you want, but don't back up their warranties as well. At least not in my experiences. But whatever you decide, research it really well and know what you want before you go to the store/website. Good luck!

Lets see, here is a breakdown of the pros and cons of each.

DESKTOP PC
*Pros*
- Usually you get a more powerful PC than a laptop if you were to spend the same money on both.
- Easier to uprgrade and fix if there are problems.
- Has more capabilites, (also falls in with upgrading features).
- Much better at cooling the system when the processor is running at a fast speed, therefore you avoid the trouble of worrying that the system might shut off if it overheats.
- Comes with a better monitor (might not be true, but most often is).
*Cons*
- Much larger, hence you cannot take it where you want.
- Much less advanced at wireless connections, though you can add a wireless connection card to it.
- Uses more electricity and often is much louder than a laptop.

LAPTOP
*Pros*
- Excellent at wireless connections, especially with the newer Centrino/Turion processors.
- Good for working on the go, travel size.
- Can run on battery, so you are not tied to a power outlet.
*Cons*
- Might overheat and shut off if you run too much high demanding programs.
- Harder to upgrade or fix in case problems occur.
- Keyboard is much less favourable for typing, nor is the touchpad easy to use.
- Battery might not last as long as desired.
- Has fragile parts, might cause hardware to break.

Final Conclusion: If you are demanding a computer that stays at home and is powerful enough for you to do work, play games, watch videos, download, etc, stay with a desktop computer. However, if you are a person who travels a lot, a laptop might be a better choice.

Well a dell is a type of a computer brand, xp is a type of operating system. It depends on what you prefer. Desktops are cheaper normally, can offer more memory for a cheaper price, and can have more features than a laptop. But laptops, take up more space, are easier to take anywhere, and you just cant beat having internet in the car. I went from a desktop to a laptop and I cant see myself going back to a desktop. while I could of gotten more memory for a lesser price, I love the mobility, and the fact that I can be in my bed and on the computer. If you arent ready to make the leap, then try a wireless keyboard and mouse for your desktop, if you love that, then go for the laptop.

Dell is computer hardware and Windows XP is an operating system, they're usually combined, aren't they?
anyhow, I prefer laptops because of the mobility, but regular computers are usually faster, if they're as up-to-date as a given laptop. So if you're getting the most recent stuff, laptop for mobility, or desktop computer for speed and operating power.
also, laptops usually cost more, I believe.

Laptop brings portability but in most cases very fragile and doesn't pack the same power as the regular desktop PC. It's also non-upgradable.

If you want to use your pc from anywhere for regular or business purposes, go for the laptop. If you want more power for things like movies, mp3,s and especially gaming, go for the desktop PC.

a desktop has much more power and with a lcd monitor they dont take up as much space, laptops cost more, but are portible at least til your battery runs dead in a hour or 2, Most places have computers available when you travel (bring a usb flashdrive) and you will have the use of your files and dont need to tote a computer everywhere you go

It depends what you need it for, if you will be traveling alot like I do a laptop is the best option, but if you are going to be living in one stable location than a desktop is probably a lot more efficient, and they are less likey to break down and easier to upgrade with new hardware.
