I just got dsl, what is best way to disconnect when I want to be offline?

Do I turn off modem or leave on and shut off computer or what?

The simplest way is to shut off all Internet related programs on your computer (if keeping it on) and just disconnect the Ethernet (the cable with the ends looking like larger phone jacks) or USB, or whatever you're using to connect the modem to your computer. This allows you to connect faster than turning off the modem completely, so you don't have to reconnect and everything.

I turn off my computer. I usually leave my modem on, but you can turn it off if you like. If you want to leave your computer on you can turn the modem off. Either way will work.

Start Menu --> Control Panel --> Network Connections

Right Click on your connection and click disable... and the same to enable again.

This actually shuts down the drivers and frees some resources for the system.

If you want to disconnect and still have your computer on, go to the lower right corner of your screen and there you will see a two computers, the icon for "local area connection". Right click and choose "disable."

If you want to connect again you will have to go to the start menu, then to control pannel, from there choose network connections, find the icon for your dsl connection, double click and enable.

You can leave on the modem, just disconnect the computer from the network (if wired just unplug wire, if wireless disable wireless).
