It is helping to ruin it, yes. When a culture admires robbing, killing, doing time in prison, drinking, drugging, selling drugs for more $$, beating and having sex with ho's and degrading women - then YES! It is helping turn the kids into scumbags and they don't even see it. (Everyone else can!!)

This is a very interesting question.
I know a lot of people would say yes. I live in one of the worst cities, education-level wise, in the US. My mother, as a teacher in one of the 'worst' elementary schools, HATES the hip hop culture, because she truly believes, without a doubt, that is it ruining so many young people's lives. And to some degree, I agree with her.
Many poor kids, especially inner-city and black [statistically], look up to these rappers and hip hop artists, especially if they are lacking people to look up to in their life. This results in a glamorized view of things like no or limited education, gang and gun usage, negatives views of women, etc.
I do not believe it is the hip hop artists that we should blame, however. First of all, I believe the blame rests mainly at our country's [at least here in the US] feet. If more money was given to school and education, especially in places like poor inner-city schools, and more given to welfare, children living in group homes, etc - there would not be the hip hop culture as it exists today. It is only because of the evergrowing gap between the rich of the country and the poor that people - especially young kids - have to turn to things like gangs to protect them and their families [because the government doesn't only not do it, they don't give the families they need the money to do it themselves].
It is also, to a certain degree, the fault of the parents. I realize that for a lot of the hip hop target audience, the parents do not have the time or money to spend as much time with their children that they wish, but it is still up to them to instill the 'proper' morals in them.
All of this said, this is JUST my opinion, of course. You asked a very interesting question, however, and I hope I brought some insite to it!
