It used to be more of Sin City, but in the last decade it has changed its image.
In the 1990's Mayor Rudy Giuliani took a firm stand against vagrants and the red-light district in the Times Square region. That section has had an economic rebirth due to large corporations like Disney investing in renovations. Currently, NYC is rated one of the safest cities for it's size in the United States.
Previously, New Yorkers were notoriously rude, both to tourists and each other. It's a high-stress environment with the crowding and noise. However, since 9/11 the attitudes of the natives have mellowed as they have taken a "we're all in it together to survive" mentality and normal every-day courtesies have re-surfaced.
BTW, Yahoo is not located in NYC, so I don't know why you are equating Yahoo with that locale. Yahoo is located in San Francisco Bay Area, 3000 miles away from NYC.
My vote for the most sinful city is probably Las Vegas. Just like in the Stephen King book.

NYC is like Babel, you can listen so many languages and see so many cultures mingling together. By the way I love NYC.
