My girl had to start at 10...when you start noticing things...then you should get her one. If you are uncomfortable about helping her pick one out...take her to a store and let her get help from one of the salesladies. I took my child, but she was a little embarrassed anyway, so I took her and let one of the ladies help her. (She was so nice and helped her out so much)
