So you don't end up eating the cheese from the top of old pizza boxes. So you have a real roof over your head, not the old box that a 68cm television came in. In case your family get into trouble or if you want a decent girlfriend, it is good to have a few dollars laying about.

To support yourself (food, rent, bills)
To have a purpose in life
TO be a productive member of society
Because it is what grown up adults do to take care of themselves and their families.
